The Oaxaca state government launched the ‘Raíces Viajeras’ program, a social tourism initiative designed to provide free travel, medical care, and recreation for senior citizens. Coordinated by the Secretaría de Turismo and the Sistema para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (DIF) Oaxaca, the program aims to facilitate 21 round-trip journeys for over 1,000 older adults from 15 municipalities. Following municipalities in the program's launch, Valles Centrales region. Deputy Monica Belén López Javier described the first phase successfully completed a trip to Puerto Escondido, which included 38 senior citizens from Oaxaca de Juárez visiting Puerto Angelito and Zicatela beach. The initiative is described by officials as a social-justice measure intended to guarantee and the first policy of its kind in Oaxaca and much of Mexico aimed at guaranteeing the right to rest and recreation for the elderly. The program targets citizens aged 60 to 70, providing transportation, travel insurance, full meals, and medical accompaniment. In its first stage, the initiative benefited 144 people through trips to Puerto Escondido, including visits to Puerto Angelito and Zicatela beaches. To support the broader tourism sector, Deputy Haydeé Reyes has introduced a legislative proposal to strengthen the Oaxaca Tourism Observatory by involving more diverse sectors in decision-making. Additionally, Reyes has advocated for improvements in signage, accessibility, and mobility within tourist zones to assist elderly individuals, pregnant women, and visitors with disabilities.
