Oba Ewuare II coronation anniversary in Benin Kingdom

The Benin Kingdom is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Oba Ewuare II’s coronation, marking a decade since his ascension on October 20, 2016. Commemorations include art exhibitions and food festivals at the Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre, featuring traditional Edo delicacies such as ‘Akedi,’ ‘Black Soup,’ and ‘Akara.’

Beyond cultural festivities, the anniversary highlights the monarch’s role in regional stability, economic development, and political reconciliation within Edo State. Supporters have noted his initiatives for vocational skill acquisition in trades such as tailoring, mechanics, and phone repair, as well as his ongoing movement for the restitution of historical artifacts.

As part of the celebrations, the Oba hosted a durbar and luncheon at the Garrick Memorial School grounds, featuring horse riding and cultural displays. The event was attended by various traditional rulers and dignitaries. Representing the Sultan of Sokoto, the Emir of Kagara, Alhaji Amen Attahiru, described the Oba as a symbol of “courageous leadership and unity.” During the festivities, the Oba emphasized that Edo State remains a peaceful and accommodating environment for all law-abiding citizens, regardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu issued a congratulatory statement, describing the Oba as a symbol of “cultural heritage, dignity, and integrity” and praising his stewardship in preserving the traditions and history of the kingdom. The anniversary festivities are expected to conclude on November 21.
