Octopus bloom in UK waters

Overview

Since early 2025, a significant bloom of common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) has been spreading northwards from Devon and Cornwall toward the Scottish coastline. Experts suggest that warming seas and marine heatwaves are driving this phenomenon, which is described as the largest recorded in at least 75 years.

In response to the increase in sightings, the UK Marine Management Organisation (MMO) launched a dedicated GOV.UK reporting portal. This platform allows the public, divers, recreational anglers, and the fishing industry to submit sighting data. The MMO intends to use this information to build a comprehensive picture of the species' movement and to update fisheries management plans that were developed prior to this surge in activity.

The bloom is also impacting other marine wildlife. A recent observation by a volunteer for the Risso's Dolphin Project South West captured an octopus clinging to a Risso's dolphin off Berry Head, Devon. The Marine Biological Association noted that such sightings provide evidence of how the octopus abundance may be impacting marine wildlife. While Risso's dolphins typically feed on cephalopods like squid, researchers from the University of Exeter and the Marine Biological Association are investigating whether the octopus surge is providing new feeding opportunities as marine ecosystems change due to warming seas.
