Odisha constable death investigation
Overview
The Orissa High Court has directed the Crime Branch-CID to investigate the death of Ashutosh Mrudangia, a 31-year-old Odisha Motor Vehicle Department constable. Mrudangia died on June 12 after suffering approximately 80 per cent burn injuries during an incident on June 5.
While local police initially suspected self-immolation, the court's intervention follows a petition by the victim's sister, Nibedita Devi. The petition raised concerns regarding the fairness of the initial investigation. It was reported that Mrudangia made two dying declarations in the presence of a magistrate, naming his wife, a constable, and his brother-in-law as being involved in the attack.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of arrests despite these declarations, the court ordered the Berhampur Town police to hand over all relevant records to the CID-Crime Branch for further legal action.
