Odyssey of the Seas passenger rescue

Overview

A 44-year-old Salvadoran woman was rescued from the Ionian Sea after spending approximately 20 hours in the water. The incident occurred on October 9, 2026, when the woman went overboard from the Royal Caribbean vessel Odyssey of the Seas while it was traveling from Mykonos, Greece, to Naples, Italy.

A large-scale search and rescue operation was conducted by the Hellenic Coast Guard, involving patrol vessels, military aircraft, and helicopters. The woman was eventually spotted by the crew of the cargo ship MSC Rossella III, who identified her flashing lifebuoy light. She was subsequently picked up by a coast guard patrol boat and transported to a hospital in Pyrgos for medical examination.

Investigations by the Katakolo Port Authority and local prosecutors are ongoing. The woman reportedly stated she jumped from the ship because she ‘wanted to disembark’. A prosecutor has ordered a psychiatric evaluation to assess her mental health.
