Offshore wind farm bird collision monitoring technology

Overview

Vattenfall, in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research and Wildlife Imaging Systems (WIS), conducted a year-long pilot study at the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm in the North Sea to monitor bird and bat collision risks.

The project utilized sixteen thermal cameras integrated with artificial intelligence to provide 24-hour monitoring. The system demonstrated the ability to detect various species, including small songbirds, bats, and larger birds, across diverse weather conditions such as fog, rain, day, and night.

Data analyzed from two migration seasons identified 22 potential bird collisions. This research occurs as European nations aim to expand offshore wind capacity significantly, following commitments under the Hamburg Declaration to develop 100 GW of offshore wind projects in the North Sea by 2050.
