Ofsted inspections highlight school shortcomings

In late July 2026 the UK education watchdog Ofsted released a series of critical inspection reports. On 24 July it gave Birmingham’s Jamia Islamia secondary school an “urgent improvement” rating, citing failures in safeguarding, attendance monitoring and staff training. The same release introduced a new descriptive grading system for schools across England, with mixed outcomes reported for institutions in Greater Manchester.

A week later, on 31 July, Ofsted placed Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School in Birmingham in special measures after finding serious deficiencies in teaching quality, pupil behaviour and the use of racist and sexist language. The inspection also flagged urgent improvement needs in attendance, behaviour, leadership and support for special‑educational‑needs pupils. In a separate case, Mayfield House School in Chorley, a private specialist school funded by Lancashire County Council, was rated inadequate for an unfit curriculum and inconsistent behaviour management. Both reports underscore a widening scrutiny of school standards, especially in the special‑needs sector, and illustrate Ofsted’s escalating enforcement actions from urgent improvement to special measures and inadequate ratings.
