The proposed resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland, following a suspension of over three decades, has led to increasing demands for transparency and economic inclusion from local stakeholders. Initially, the Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to provide 500 job opportunities for local youth, arguing that the 40 slots currently allocated are insufficient. Local leadership, represented by the umbrella body KAGOTE, also expressed concerns that oil-related activities occurring without adequate consultation could undermine the credibility of the Ogoni Dialogue Committee (ODC). As the situation progressed, tensions escalated following allegations from the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni (MOSOP) that secret drilling had already commenced in the Tai and Eleme local government areas without community consent. MOSOP characterized these reported operations as a “betrayal of the spirit of the dialogue process” and demanded an immediate halt to activities. Additionally, the group requested that the names of those employed in the 40 allocated positions be made public to ensure the list does not include non-locals. In response to accusations of corruption and misconduct, the ODC Chairman, Prof. Don Baridam, has rejected claims that the committee was financially compromised or facilitating secret drilling in areas such as Ban-Ogoi and Alesa-Eleme. Baridam described the accusations as “false and misleading,” specifically denying involvement in the selection process for the 40-slot employment package. He clarified that while the initiative was proposed by the Ogoni delegation, the NNPCL utilized its own professional recruitment procedures from an existing database of qualified Ogoni applicants.
