OIC extraordinary session on Palestine and Jerusalem

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held its 23rd extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to address the situation in Palestine and Jerusalem. During preparatory meetings, the Palestinian delegation, led by Ambassador Hadi Shibli, discussed a draft resolution focused on settlement policies and protecting the legal status of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque. Shibli advocated for a full ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the facilitation of reconstruction efforts, and continued support for UNRWA. In subsequent proceedings, Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nefati reaffirmed Tunisia’s support for Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. He called for international protection for Palestinians and the lifting of blockades. Further during the session, Senegal and Sierra Leone reaffirmed their commitment to the Palestinian cause. Senegal’s Minister Cheikh Niang expressed support for the rights of the Palestinian people to an independent and viable state under international law. Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, called for justice for Palestine and a two-state solution, while also advocating for UN Security Council reform and a stronger African voice in global decision-making. The session also included the unanimous election of Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as the new OIC Secretary-General.
