In July 2026 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee convened met in Busan for its 48th session. The United States achieved secured its first natural World Heritage inscription in more than over thirty years when with the Okefenokee Swamp on the Georgia‑Florida border was added, highlighting its extensive freshwater wetlands, biodiversity and carbon‑rich peat. Officials Swamp, projected to draw up to 800,000 extra visitors annually, generating roughly 750 jobs a year and about generate roughly $60 million in economic impact. Executive Director Kim Bednarek called the designation a confirmation of the swamp’s special value, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called it a fitting recognition. The session also inscribed praised the designation. Italy’s system of 18th‑19th‑century communal (condominial) theatres in Marche, Umbria and Emilia‑Romagna. Ten theatres were selected, Emilia‑Romagna was also inscribed, raising Italy’s World Heritage portfolio total sites to 62. The nomination, promoted by Marche President Francesco Acquaroli and endorsed supported by Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, was praised for its highlighted in two subsequent reports (25 July and 27 July) that emphasized the theatres’ community‑owned management model that has fostered and its role in fostering social cohesion for over two centuries. The recognition underscores the universal value of shared cultural venues.
