Volta Redonda is hosting Olimpede 2026, an inclusive sports competition designed for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. Organized by the city hall through the Municipal Secretariat of Sport and Leisure, the event expects approximately 2,500 participants participants, including athletes, coaches, and companions, from 111 different entities. Athletes traveling from Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and the Federal District are set to compete in nearly 100 events. The competition includes disciplines such as athletics, swimming, boccia, futsal, judo, and the debut of capoeira. Raphael Thuin, president of the Paraesporte Association, stated the event serves as a “vital moment for student inclusion and individual development.” The 2026 edition has officially opened with a ceremony held at the Clube dos Funcionários in Vila Santa Cecília. The competition features over 90 events, including 350 athletics heats and more than 100 games. Beyond the competitive aspect, the event is intended to serve as a platform for socialization and the strengthening of self-esteem among participants.
