Following a catastrophic wildfire in Omiš and surrounding areas in Croatia, preliminary damage assessments estimate losses at approximately 110 million euros, though some estimates suggest the figure could exceed 120 million euros. The blaze destroyed or heavily damaged over 60 buildings, with more recent reports indicating 120 houses were destroyed, leaving 70 families homeless, one fatality, and dozens of injuries. Recovery efforts involve significant state and regional aid. The Croatian government approved 20 million euros in emergency funds, and the Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy introduced a job preservation measure. Through the Croatian Employment Service, employers in the tourism and hospitality sectors can receive up to 1,500 euros per month per worker for employees with indefinite contracts held prior to August 13, 2026. Applications for this aid are open from August 27 to September 30, 2026, with the program running through May 2027. Mayor Zvonko Močić reported that the city has received over one million euros in donations from individuals and organizations, alongside regional support such as a 20,000 euro donation from Sisačko-moslavačka County. As of early September 2026, the investigation into the cause of the fire in the Lokva Rogoznica area remains ongoing. Forensic experts and police have conducted over one hundred interviews and are reviewing surveillance footage and soil samples to determine if the blaze was caused by arson, negligence, or an accident. While investigators are considering the impact of extreme heat and drought, expert Slobodan Kocijan has ruled out the possibility of discarded glass acting as a magnifying lens. Official findings are expected within the next ten days. Concurrently, the association ‘Volim Omiš’ has submitted formal requests for information to six institutions regarding the management of the fires on August 13 and 14.
