Omoyele Sowore activism and Nigerian constitutional concerns political developments
Nigerian activist and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has raised constitutional concerns regarding President Bola Tinubu’s extended absence from Nigeria. Sowore argues that because Tinubu has been abroad for over three weeks without formally notifying the Senate President and House Speaker, the National Assembly should appoint Vice President Kashim Shettima as acting president. Sowore noted that the constitution does not recognize a ‘working vacation’ as an exception to these rules. Simultaneously, Sowore has engaged in international activism in New York City. During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Sowore participated in a pro-Palestinian demonstration and sit-in near the United Nations headquarters. He stated his involvement was to show that Nigerians stand for justice and human rights while condemning military actions in Gaza. The protest, organized by groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace, resulted in 103 arrests for disorderly conduct, including several elected officials and candidates. Sowore has since returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his 2027 presidential campaign for the African Action Congress (AAC). He stated his period abroad followed what he described as arrests, detentions, and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies. During his time in the U.S., he also advocated for the introduction of diaspora voting. Upon his return, Sowore is expected to travel to Abuja for court proceedings regarding a 2025 cybercrime case filed by the State Security Service (SSS). His campaign plans to launch a nationwide mobilization effort involving students, workers, and farmers. More recently, Sowore reflected on his transition from student activism and founding SaharaReporters to presidential politics, noting that oppressive political systems in Nigeria persist.
