The Dutch broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland (ON!) is facing the revocation of its provisional recognition within the public broadcasting system. Following advice from the Dutch Media Authority (Commissariaat voor de Media), Minister of Education, Culture and Science Rianne Letschert has announced her intention to revoke the broadcaster’s status. The regulator identified a ‘turning point’ following a controversial broadcast of the program ‘Let’s Twist Again,’ in which former editor-in-chief Joost Niemöller made remarks regarding Adolf Hitler. While the Minister noted that the legal basis for revocation rests on the broadcaster’s failure to meet statutory rules for entities using public funds, the decision follows findings that ON! structurally fails to comply with legal requirements. Specific issues cited include conflicts of interest, financial accountability, and the dissemination of incorrect information. Recent developments clarify that the government is initiating the revocation process due to a series of recurring issues rather than a single incident. Key grounds include the imposition of two sanctions within a single year and insufficient cooperation with other broadcasters. The public broadcaster NPO has formally called for the revocation, citing systematic violations of journalistic ethics. While ON! director Peter Vlemmix previously indicated the organization would continue its ‘struggle for survival,’ he has since described the Minister’s decision follows move as a formal request from ‘concerning day for public broadcasting’ and indicated that the NPO. organization may pursue legal action to contest the decision. In response to the situation, Mona Keijzer argued that the controversy reflects deeper systemic issues within the Dutch public broadcasting system, calling for reforms to address concerns regarding pluriformity, political independence, and representation.
