Online dating platform security and AI integration
Overview
A U.S. Senate investigation led by Senators Maggie Hassan and Marsha Blackburn found that Match Group, the parent company of Tinder and Hinge, failed to prevent widespread romance scams. The report, titled ‘Outmatched: Tinder, Scammers, and Match Group’s Efforts to Catch Up’, revealed that Tinder had not updated most of its machine learning models for several years. Between May 2024 and December 2025, views of median scammer profiles on Tinder increased by over 700 percent. In the first nine months of 2025, approximately 1.5 million fraudulent or malicious accounts on Tinder and Hinge successfully matched with legitimate users in the United States, with nearly 500,000 of those accounts exchanging contact information.
In response to these findings, Match Group implemented new verification measures, such as Face Check, and incorporated a new AI model in early 2026. Separately, dating platforms are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence to assist users. Bumble is moving toward AI-driven matchmaking, Grindr is piloting bot-to-bot conversations to vet dates, and Hinge is using AI for profile creation and conversation starters.
However, the integration of AI is creating complex outcomes. While tools assist with profile optimization and message drafting, they have contributed to a sense of distrust and disillusionment. Users have reported discrepancies between AI-enhanced digital personas and real-life interactions, such as the use of ChatGPT to craft profiles or the generation of fake photos, leading to a breakdown of trust when reality does not match the AI-generated illusion.
