Online scam activity in Sri Lanka

Overview

Authorities in Sri Lanka have intensified efforts to combat online financial fraud, including the arrest of a suspect linked to a Telegram-based scheme involving approximately Rs. 12.6 million.

Despite a surge in criminal activity, with police reporting 1,093 arrests and raids on 27 suspected scam compounds between January and September, there have been zero successful prosecutions for transnational online scam operations. Experts warn the country risks becoming an industrial-scale hub for cyber scams involving organized crime and trafficked workers.

The lack of legal accountability is attributed to outdated 2007 computer crime legislation, which requires formal complaints from victims. Since many victims are located abroad, most suspects are currently being deported for visa violations rather than being prosecuted for cybercrime.
