Ontario PC expense scandal
Entities: Stan Cho · Ontario · David Piccini · Doug Ford · LiUNA
Overview
Mid‑July 2026 three Progressive Conservative MPPs – Charmaine Williams, Hardeep Grewal and Nina Tangri – attracted criticism for claiming over C$120,000 in hotel expenses despite living within 50 km of Queen’s Park. The claims, made under a “special circumstances” rule intended for emergencies, spurred opposition calls for repayment and a provincial pledge to scrap the rule.
Tourism, Culture and Gaming Minister Stan Cho resigned on 17 July after it emerged he had claimed about C$16,000 for Toronto hotel stays, which he repaid and described as a mistake. Further reporting showed Cho’s riding association had spent nearly C$100,000 on food, beverage, hotel and flight costs largely outside his constituency.
On 20 July the integrity commissioner launched an investigation into Grewal’s use of a publicly funded constituency budget to place ads in the Punjabi Post, a newspaper owned by his father, adding to criticism of his C$27,000 hotel bill. Both incidents intensified opposition demands for tighter oversight and transparency, and the Ford government confirmed it will eliminate the special‑circumstances provision.
A further controversy emerged on 26 July when Premier Doug Ford and Labour Minister David Piccini were found to have billed taxpayers C$11,709 for a three‑day July 2025 trip to Orlando, Florida, for a LiUNA conference. The claim, listed as an “international mission,” included flights and hotel costs and prompted renewed questions about who authorized such expenses and why expense rules were altered. Critics are pressing Ford for a full explanation of the Florida trip and the broader pattern of hotel‑spending claims.
Opposition parties continue to call for comprehensive reforms to the expense system governing Ontario legislators.
