The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continued its Canada Day Week traffic‑safety campaign through July and early August 2026, expanding both the number of charges and the range of offences addressed. Notable incidents included an impaired‑driving and child‑restraint charge on Highway 11 (July 8), a fatal multi‑motorcycle crash (July 11), and a series of speeding, uninsured‑vehicle and assault‑related offences across the province. The Upper Ottawa Valley detachment logged 175 charges, with 68 for speeding and 12 alcohol‑related offences. On July 14 a Sudbury driver faced prohibited‑and‑uninsured‑driving charges after alleged motorcycle racing, while a Leamington collision escalated into assault‑with‑weapon charges. In Peterborough County a 56‑year‑old was convicted of personation and operating a prohibited vehicle, and a fleeing driver on Highway 401 in Cramahe was charged with flight‑from‑a‑peace‑officer and impaired operation. The OPP’s Prince Edward County, the RIDE program generated and other investigations led to nine impaired‑driving charges in Prince Edward County. On August 5, 63‑year‑old Bhupinder Gharial was charged after a single‑vehicle collision on Highway 410’s northbound off‑ramp, fleeing the scene, being found impaired, having his Tesla SUV impounded for seven days, receiving a 90‑day licence suspension throughout July. These included arrests of Christopher Sampson, David Tobin, Bradley Chapman, and facing Alla Adler, as well as an unidentified driver who nearly collided with a September 3 court date. police cruiser on July 18. During the Civic Holiday long weekend weekend, the OPP recorded its deadliest weekend of the year with eight fatalities.
