In September 2026, the pan-European Open Monument Day celebrated its 40th anniversary under the theme ‘Resilient heritage, in times of uncertainty’. The event opened thousands of historic sites to the public for free across several countries. In the Netherlands, the national opening of the VriendenLoterij Open Monumentendag was held at Museum Batavialand in ~~Flevoland~~ Lelystad, Flevoland. The inauguration was conducted by Minister Rianne ~~Letschert and~~ Letschert, Ambassador Janny van der Heijden, ~~with approximately~~ and Jan Klopman. Regional highlights included Utrecht, featuring 87 monuments and 120 activities, such as the Louis Hartlooper Complex. In Westerkwartier, a record 53 locations participated, including museums, churches, and windmills. Other Dutch activities included the Dutch Steam Machine Museum in Medemblik, architectural showcases in Leeuwarden, and a symposium in Eemsdelta. Specialized programming included the ‘Open Train Festival’ at the Spoorwegmuseum and ‘Vineyard Open Days’. In Kampen, over 40 monuments were made accessible, with a specific focus on the city’s 200-year history as a cigar manufacturing hub. Other participating Dutch areas included Rotterdam, Wassenaar, Alphen aan den Rijn, Nieuwkoop, Kaag en Braassem, Gouda, and Renkum. In Haren, ~~where~~ the Burgemeester Boeremapark was highlighted as a green monument. In The Hague, 89 monuments were showcased, including the former Noodzetel complex and the former headquarters of the Hague Municipal Telephone Service. In Belgium, activities were prominent in East Flanders under the theme ‘In Good Hands’. Projects such as ‘Flemish Masters in their Place’ highlighted hidden gems across Flanders and Brussels. In Itterbeek, the event focused on craftsmanship and heritage care at the Sint-Pieterskerk and Brouwerij Timmermans. Additionally, the Sint-Stefanuskerk in ’s Herenelderen offered rare views of a 15th-century reliquary shrine.
