Germany is celebrating the ‘Tag des offenen Denkmals’ (Open Monument Day) on September 13, 2026. Organized by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, the event follows the theme ‘NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur’ (Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure), providing free public access to historical buildings, technical installations, and cultural sites. The theme focuses on how historical structures, transport routes, and technical installations have shaped and connected society. Described as the country’s largest cultural event, the initiative features more than ~~6,000~~ 6,500 historical sites opening their doors to the public, including private residences, industrial buildings, and religious structures. Regional participation is extensive: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is hosting approximately 260 ~~buildings, including churches and a restored historic station in Lübstorf;~~ buildings; Saxony features nearly 700 ~~objects, such as the Alte Wasserkunst in Bautzen;~~ objects; and Berlin offers access to industrial heritage sites like the AEG Turbine ~~Hall and the Schöneberg Gasometer.~~ Hall. In ~~Bavaria, over 1,000 offerings~~ the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, 40 monuments are ~~available,~~ participating, with ~~Bamberg serving as a central hub featuring over 50 monuments,~~ 28 located in the city of Saalfeld, offering tours of castles, churches, and industrial sites alongside nostalgic rides on vintage buses. In the Palatinate region, sites such as the Old ~~Town Hall.~~ Cotton Mill in Speyer and the City and Fortress Museum in Germersheim will host archaeological workshops and family activities. In Gießen, the Untere Hardthof association will provide guided tours of a former brewery complex dating back to the 1840s, featuring historic brewery cellars and Jugendstil facades. Other regional activities include tours of historical train stations in Bremen, industrial heritage sites in Wuppertal, and specialized programs in ~~Karlsruhe, which features 122 monuments including the main station bunker.~~ Karlsruhe. In ~~Ludwigsburg,~~ Bavaria, over 1,000 offerings are available, with Bamberg serving as a ~~free shuttle bus will connect various landmarks, while the~~ central hub. Additionally, Museum Ludwig in Cologne ~~celebrates~~ will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a free public festival. ~~Additional programming includes guided tours of St. Medard Church in Bendorf, explorations of Burg Sayn, and discussions on ‘Ostmoderne’ (East Modernism) in Leipzig.~~
