In mid‑July 2026 2026, three open‑source projects—SharpEmu, RPCSX and Kyty—reached the first load‑screen milestone, booting a PS5 and displaying simple 2D indie titles on typical PCs. By late July July, SharpEmu and KyTyPS5 pushed further, loading the Grand Theft Auto V logo and the character‑creation screen of Demon’s Souls Remake, while also showing menus for games such as Ghost of Yotei and Super Liminal. Tests on mid‑range hardware (e.g., Ryzen 5 5600X, Radeon RX 6650 XT) recorded high CPU usage and frequent crashes beyond these early stages, underscoring the difficulty of emulating the PS5’s custom SSD, RDNA 2 GPU and instruction set. A follow‑up on 30 July reported that KytyPS5 succeeded in running two full 3D titles—XIII and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants—at roughly 20‑30 fps on Windows PCs. Gameplay is possible but marred by texture glitches, lighting errors and occasional crashes. The emulator remains experimental, and developers caution that stable, full‑game compatibility is still likely years away. On 13 August, SharpEmu achieved a technical milestone by running the PS5 title ‘Astro’s Playroom’ locally on a Steam Deck via SteamOS, rather than through remote play. However, performance was extremely low, averaging approximately 0.6 FPS with heavily interrupted audio, only reaching the PlayStation Studios loading screen. SharpEmu, which is being developed from scratch using C#, continues to target various architectures including x86, Apple Silicon, and Windows on Arm.
