OpenAI announced it will terminate its partnership with the AI coding tool Cursor, effective November 12, 2026. This decision follows SpaceX’s $60 billion acquisition of Cursor’s developer, Anysphere, in mid-August. OpenAI invoked a change-of-control clause, stating it cannot be confident that SpaceX will adhere to its terms of service. The company specifically cited a history of contractual non-compliance by Elon Musk’s other entities, such as X and xAI. OpenAI also noted ~~it is providing~~ that future models, including the ~~maximum notice period allowed under its current contract.~~ upcoming Astra, will not be provided to the platform. Elon Musk dismissed the decision on X, labeling Sam Altman and Greg Brockman as “untrustworthy.” While Cursor co-founder Michael Truell noted that OpenAI models currently account for approximately 5% of Cursor’s AI traffic, he indicated the company is in discussions with OpenAI to resolve the matter. In response to the potential disruption, Anthropic has announced plans to expand its computing resources to increase the availability of its Claude models within the Cursor platform. Developers may still access OpenAI models via personal API keys or IDE extensions.
