OpenClaw AI agent platform 2.0 update and enterprise expansion

OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent platform, has released version 2.0 (designated as version 2026.8.1). This major update involves a significant overhaul of the software architecture, including a migration from file-based session storage to a SQLite database. The update introduces a redesigned browser interface to serve as a centralized workspace for managing settings, files, and agent activity. New features include a guided onboarding process that automatically detects existing AI credentials or local models, such as those running through Ollama or LM Studio. To facilitate teamwork, the platform added “Shared Cloud Sessions,” a “multiplayer” feature allowing authorized collaborators to join or take over tasks via a Gateway without requiring direct access to provider credentials. Following a transition to a nonprofit foundation in July, the project now faces increased competition from specialized features in ChatGPT and Claude, as well as integrated tools like Microsoft’s Scout. Expanding its scope, the OpenClaw Foundation has launched OpenClaw Enterprise (OCE), a free, open-source control plane intended to manage persistent AI agents in enterprise environments. Originally developed at OpenAI before being donated to the foundation, OCE provides multi-tenancy, auditability, and governance controls. Industry leaders including Red Hat and NVIDIA are involved in the project, with pilot programs currently underway at Red Hat and OpenAI. The initiative aims to transition AI agent frameworks from individual developer tools into scalable organizational infrastructure.
