Tokyo-based deep tech startup OptQC is securing significant funding to advance its photonic quantum computing technology. Initially, the company received investment from Nissay Capital as part of its Series A funding round. This technology, which originated from research at the University of Tokyo, aims to operate at room temperature and normal pressure to reduce energy consumption and engineering complexity. Following the initial investment, OptQC raised an additional 7 billion yen in a Series A2 funding round led by NTT, with participation from 21 entities including Kyocera, Mitsubishi Electric, and KDDI. This latest round includes a capital and business alliance with NTT to accelerate the development of fault-tolerant optical quantum computers. OptQC’s total funding, including subsidies, now exceeds 20 billion yen, as the company works toward a next-generation machine with a capacity of 10,000 qubits. In a recent technological milestone, OptQC and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) commenced operations of ‘MoQuren’, the first domestic photonic quantum computer, at AIST’s G-QuAT research center. This photonic system, which operates at room temperature and standard pressure, is positioned as a more energy-efficient and scalable alternative to superconducting models for AI-driven data centers.
