Orca attacks on sailing vessels off Galicia

In late July 2026 a series of unusual encounters between wild orcas and small sailing vessels occurred along Spain’s north‑west coast. On 23 July a pod of orcas approached the yacht Idem near Cape Estaca de Bares, damaging its steering, flooding the hull and ultimately sinking the boat; the crew were rescued by nearby vessels and transferred to port. The incident was the fourth reported orca encounter that day along the Galician shoreline.

Three days later, on 26 July, two additional sailboats near the Torre de Hércules off A Coruña suffered loss of steering after being struck by the same species. One vessel required a tow by the regional rescue service and a patrol ship, while the skipper of the second boat managed to regain control and dock without external assistance. Both incidents prompted deployments of maritime rescue resources and highlighted growing concerns over marine wildlife interactions in the area.
