Organ donation and blood collection activities in Brazil
Organ procurement and transplant activities have been reported in different Brazilian regions during late 2026. In Campos dos Goytacazes, Hospital Ferreira Machado completed its tenth organ procurement of the year following the death of a 58-year-old man. The hospital reported a total of 10 family authorizations and 10 successful procurements for the year, resulting in the collection of over 37 organs and tissues. In Paraíba, the Paraíba Transplant Center recorded its seventh heart donation of the year at the Hospital de Emergência e Trauma in João Pessoa. This multi-organ donation, involving an 18-year-old donor, allowed five patients to be removed from waiting lists. Officials attributed the increase in donations to State Health Secretariat investments, including professional training and the use of aircraft to reach remote areas. Recent reports indicate further advancements in the Midwest, where the Hospital Estadual Dr. Alberto Rassi (HGG) in Goiás has reached a milestone of 1,500 transplants performed since 2017. In Goiânia, the Military Police of Goiás (Graer) utilized a helicopter to transport a liver for transplant. Simultaneously, blood donation campaigns are active across several states. In Rio de Janeiro, the Military Firefighters (CBMERJ) launched a campaign to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Defense. In Tocantins, the Super Servidor project has collected 337 blood bags since 2022. Health authorities in Paraná and Bahia are also organizing collection events to maintain blood and bone marrow stocks.
