Organ donation trends in Turkey
Overview
Turkey has seen an increase in digital organ donation wills, with Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu reporting that over 143,887 citizens have utilized the e-Devlet and e-Nabız platforms to register their wishes. To date, the Ministry of Health reports that 2,510,018 organs and tissues have been donated.
Despite these digital advancements, organ donation rates face significant hurdles. Family consent for brain-dead donors averages approximately 20%, a figure noted to be much lower than European averages. Medical experts indicate that while a single donor can potentially provide between 7 and 8 organs, challenges remain due to family concerns regarding the definition of brain death and the physical integrity of the deceased. Currently, more than 32,000 people in Turkey are awaiting transplants.
