Organized crime escalation in La Libertad, Peru

The La Libertad region in Peru is experiencing a significant surge in organized crime, including high rates of homicide, extortion, and kidnapping. The Public Ministry’s Criminality Observatory reported 211 kidnappings between January and July, with groups like ‘Los Pulpos’ utilizing military-grade weaponry and torture to target sectors such as mining.

In response to these trends, regional governor Joana Cabrera Pimentel has requested increased police presence and specialized intelligence units from the Interior Ministry. She proposed designating Trujillo as the ‘capital of the fight against organized crime’ to maintain operational capacity.

Criminal influence has extended into the political sphere, with mayoral candidates in the Sánchez Carrión province reporting extortion attempts and death threats. Groups such as ‘Los ZTZ’ have targeted candidates with demands for money and threats of violence, claiming control over regions including Huamachuco and the Sierra Liberteña. Affected candidates have appealed to the National Police of Peru for protection.

Recent developments indicate escalating political violence following the assassination of regional governorship candidate Susy Aponte Polo. In response, the Juntos por el Perú caucus has announced plans to file a motion of censure against Interior Minister César Astudillo, while simultaneously calling for reforms to strengthen the National Police and combat crime.
