ORLEN Group has undertaken several strategic initiatives to enhance its energy production and supply security. The company secured certification under the Oil and Gas Institute’s KZR INiG sustainability scheme for its Płock refinery in Poland, allowing for the co-processing of biobased feedstocks like rapeseed and used cooking oils to meet European Union renewable energy targets. This certification, recognized by the European Commission, enables the refinery to increase the renewable content of its fuels by utilizing existing units for cohydrotreatment. Currently, the facility can process approximately 100,000 metric tons of biobased feedstocks annually, representing up to 3.5 percent of the feed. ORLEN plans to increase this capacity to 150,000 tons through upgrades and intends to expand certification to include additional feedstocks such as linseed and mustard. To stabilize supply against market volatility, ORLEN signed a three-year agreement with Equinor for crude oil from the Johan Sverdrup field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Starting in September, the contract features flexible annual delivery volumes ranging from approximately 5 million to over 9 million tonnes. At maximum capacity, this agreement will cover up to one-quarter of ORLEN’s total annual crude oil requirements. The supplied oil is intended for refineries in Poland, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic, aiming to strengthen energy security in Central and Eastern Europe. ORLEN President Ireneusz Fąfara noted the agreement is a response to “global market instability,” while Equinor’s Executive Vice President Irene Rummelhoff highlighted the role of the Norwegian Continental Shelf in “strengthening European energy security.” ~~The contract also allows for the potential supply of other crude grades from the Norwegian shelf.~~
