Orthodox Church commemorations of Dionysius and Hierotheus

Overview

The Orthodox Church observes religious feast days in early October, specifically commemorating Saint Dionysius the Areopagite and Saint Hierotheus.

Saint Dionysius, a former member of the Athenian Areopagus council and a judge, is honored for his conversion through the preaching of the Apostle Paul. He is recognized as a hieromartyr and a patron of the educated, the gentle, and the Greek judiciary. While tradition links him to significant theological writings, some modern researchers suggest these may have been composed by an unknown author centuries later.

Additionally, the Church honors Saint Hierotheus, a Platonic philosopher and disciple of the Apostle Paul who served as the first Bishop of Athens. Liturgical services and celebrations are held across various locations, including Kos, Chrysovergi, and throughout Greece, to mark these historical and spiritual figures.
