The Orthodox Church observes October 1 as a day to honor Saint Ananias the Apostle and Saint Romanos the Melodist. Saint Romanos, a significant figure in Byzantine hymnography from Emesa, Syria, is traditionally credited with composing roughly 1,000 kontakia. One of his most famous works is the Christmas Kontakion, ‘The Virgin today gives birth to the one above all’, which is said to have followed a divine vision. To commemorate the saint, the Association of Psaltes of the Attica Region held a service at the Athens Cathedral. The event included a Great Panegyrical Vespers presided over by Bishop Barnabas of Christoupolis and Metropolitan Ignatius of Demetrias. Musical contributions were provided by the Association of Psaltes of the Attica Region and the choir of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias ‘Saint John Koukouzelis’. During the service, Archimandrite Epiphanios Oikonomou spoke on the legacy of Saint Romanos, noting that psalmody should be an act of service and humility.
