Osaka Castle main tower cultural designation
Overview
Japan's Council for Cultural Affairs has recommended that the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology designate the Osaka Castle main keep as a national Important Cultural Property.
The recommendation focuses on the ‘third generation’ tower, a steel-reinforced concrete structure completed in 1931. Unlike the original towers from the Toyotomi or Tokugawa periods, this modern reconstruction was funded by approximately 78,000 public donations during the ‘Dai-Osaka’ or ‘Great Osaka’ era.
The designation recognizes the tower’s architectural significance as a pioneer of castle reconstructions, its advanced use of reinforced concrete technology for its time, and its historical value as a landmark. The site is noted for its unique coexistence of Toyotomi-era foundations, Tokugawa-era stone walls, and the modern Showa-era tower. Public interest in the site has been further driven by the NHK Taiga drama ‘Toyotomi Kyodai!’
