Oslo and Bergen demonstration planning for October 7

A solidarity network of various organizations in Oslo has announced a demonstration scheduled for October 7 at Jernbanetorget under the slogan ‘Support the Palestinian resistance struggle!’. The event organizers have indicated they will use imagery from the October 7, 2023, attacks. The announcement has triggered a media and political debate in Norway. Critics have characterized the march as support for terrorism, particularly due to the use of imagery from the Gaza barrier breach. In response, the Solidaritetsnettverket defended the legality of the protest, citing UN resolutions regarding the rights of occupied people to resist. While some groups, such as Oslo SU and Motmakt, have withdrawn their support for the march, other organizations including the Anti-imperialist Federation and the Lebanese Association in Norway remain committed to the demonstration. As the scheduled dates approach, the controversy has expanded to include planned demonstrations in both Oslo and Bergen. Organizers from the Solidarity Network report that Facebook has censored their event pages and social media presence. Political opposition has intensified; Torkel Brekke, a professor at MF Vitenskapelig Høyskole, has publicly criticized the demonstrations, stating that the involvement of certain actors makes the event an expression of antisemitism. Additionally, the youth wing of the Socialist Left Party (Sosialistisk Ungdom) has withdrawn its support, characterizing the event as a demonstration in support of Hamas. Other participating groups include Rød Ungdom and various Palestinian and African organizations.
