Ottoman era photography exhibition in Cyprus

Overview

The “Ottoman Traces in Cyprus” photography exhibition was scheduled to launch at the Bahçeşehir Cyprus University Alayköy campus on October 15, 2026. The event is a collaborative project involving the Osmanlar Foundation, the Dr. Fuat Sezgin Islamic Science History Research Foundation (IBTAV), and the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The exhibition features approximately 92 digitized historical photographs from the glass negative archives of Hacı Ali Rıfat Efendi, the final Ottoman qadi of Cyprus, and his son, Ahmet Burhaneddin Kadızâde. These images document the architecture, streets, and daily social and cultural life of the island during the Ottoman era.

Following the initial launch in Cyprus, the collection is planned to move to the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) Gallery in Istanbul in November 2026. Organizers noted that the initiative aims to preserve social memory and connect different generations through digital preservation of cultural heritage.
