Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) has undergone significant structural and strategic shifts. In late August 2026, the bank achieved what it described as a “historic milestone” by establishing a correspondent banking relationship and opening a US dollar account with Citibank. This move was intended Citibank to facilitate international payments and strengthen the connection between the Angolan economy and global financial centers. Shortly thereafter, the bank’s ownership structure changed as payments. Following this, the Portuguese banking group Banco BPI agreed to sell its entire 33.35% stake in BFA. The stake is being sold BFA to Congolian Financial, a company Financial SA (CFSA), an entity linked to the Angolan conglomerate Grupo Carrinho, for Carrinho. The transaction is valued at a fixed payment of €388.5 million plus potential million, with an additional payments. €43.5 million due in May 2027. The final price may also increase based on a variable component tied to BFA’s 2026 dividends. This divestment concludes BPI’s three-decade presence in Angola and its long-term effort to reduce its exposure to the market, a process prompted by European Central Bank requirements in 2014. While previous sale attempts in 2023 were hindered by the depreciation of the Angolan market. Upon completion kwanza, the current agreement utilizes a fixed euro-denominated price to ensure stability. Completion of the sale, sale is subject to approval from the National Bank of Angola and confirmation from the Capital Market Commission regarding mandatory public tender offer requirements. Upon completion, Congolian Financial will become the second-largest shareholder in BFA. BFA, trailing Unitel.
