Ozren Mountain mining protests
Overview
Residents in the Ozren region of Bosnia and Herzegovina have begun protesting planned geological research and mining activities. Protesters from villages including Sočkovac, Karanovac, Kakmuž, and Petrovo gathered to oppose land leasing by companies such as ‘Belator’ d.o.o. and its subsidiary ‘Belator B’. Demonstrators, supported by local clergy and the head of the Petrovo municipality, asserted that “Ozren is not for sale,” noting that a previous referendum saw 98 percent of locals vote against mining.
As the situation progressed, reports indicated that Yugo Metals Limited has reportedly leased private plots to begin drilling platforms, access roads, and soil testing for nickel and cobalt. Local environmental group ‘Ozrenski studenac’ and residents have alleged that the company failed to meet legal obligations to notify the Petrovo municipality prior to commencing work. Consequently, residents have called for institutional measures to ban detailed geological research in the area.
