Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reported an economic turnaround in Pakistan driven by fiscal, structural, and governance reforms. These measures have reportedly restored macroeconomic stability and improved investor confidence, resulting in stable outlook upgrades from Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P. To sustain this growth, the government is focusing on infrastructure modernization, specifically the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway corridor from Karachi to Peshawar, and strengthening cooperation with the Asian Development Bank. Further initiatives include reducing energy costs, implementing a ‘regulatory guillotine’ to eliminate unnecessary business procedures, and utilizing the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) as a one-window mechanism for commercial activities. Additionally, the Prime Minister noted that increased tax enforcement by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) generated Rs800 billion in the previous financial year without new taxes, facilitating positive interactions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Recent efforts to improve the business environment include the push for nationwide implementation of the Ease of Doing Business Act and the creation of a single regulatory registry to compile all national rules. The Prime Minister has cited the modernization of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan as a model for other institutions and has ordered third-party validation of these reforms. To ensure consistency, the SIFC is tasked with coordinating these changes with provincial governments. Meanwhile, the administration continues to navigate a political deadlock with the opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), following unsuccessful attempts to establish a dialogue framework regarding jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
