Pakistan expulsion of Afghan medical students

Overview

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has issued a directive ordering all Afghan medical and dental students currently enrolled in Pakistani institutions to return to Afghanistan. This mandate, reportedly following policy decisions by the Pakistani Interior Ministry, also prohibits institutions from admitting new Afghan students or facilitating academic transfers during the current session.

The order affects all students, including those under the Allama Muhammad Iqbal scholarship program. Implementation has led to students being evicted from hostels, leaving many without housing. Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran condemned the move as “petty, vindictive cruelty,” particularly as some students are in their final year of study.

In response, thirteen Afghan students have filed a petition in the Lahore High Court to contest the expulsion, arguing that the decision threatens their professional futures and must operate within constitutional and international legal limits. The measure has drawn criticism from Pakistani lawmakers and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
