Pakistan government fuel relief and political engagement
Overview
The Pakistani government has focused on expanding fuel subsidy programs and engaging with political parties to address economic pressures. Initially, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reported that the government’s fuel subsidy scheme had surpassed 10 million direct beneficiaries, with an estimated 50 million people benefiting indirectly. The administration allocated Rs75 billion to sustain the initiative, which supports motorcyclists, rickshaw operators, and owners of small vehicles.
Following this, the Prime Minister met with a Jamaat-e-Islami delegation to discuss the impact of rising petroleum prices. While attributing price increases to international circumstances, the government agreed to form a joint committee with the party to develop recommendations for expanding fuel relief and reducing the petroleum levy in future budgets. At that stage, registration for the relief scheme had increased to approximately 12.7 million people.
