Pakistan Railways safety crisis
Overview
In late July 2026 a coal‑laden freight train derailed near Wahab Shah station in Sindh, prompting Pakistan Railways to suspend both up‑ and down‑track services for up to 24 hours and halt several passenger services. The incident highlighted chronic financial constraints, staff shortages and operational inefficiencies that have long plagued the network.
A week later, a joint certification report revealed that roughly half of the railway’s freight fleet consists of severely deteriorated coaches lacking essential spare parts. Drivers and passenger‑train operators have repeatedly refused to run these unsafe trains, yet pressure from officials has forced continued operation. Over the preceding two months more than 15 minor accidents were recorded, attributed to the poor condition of both tracks and rolling stock. Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbas ordered workshops to produce new coaches, but production targets remain unmet, leaving the system in a critical state.
