Pakistan-Syria diplomatic and trade relations

Overview

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani conducted a historic visit to Islamabad, marking the first visit by a Syrian foreign minister to Pakistan in 19 years. During meetings with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and other officials, both nations pledged to revitalize bilateral relations by expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defense, education, and human resource development.

Key economic sectors identified for joint cooperation include textiles, pharmaceuticals, leather, sports goods, information technology, and agriculture. The leaders also discussed the potential resumption of direct flights to facilitate religious pilgrimages and people-to-people exchanges. Pakistan reaffirmed its support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, specifically regarding the Golan Heights.

In a related announcement made in Istanbul, al-Shaibani stated that Syrian authorities are working to identify and prosecute those involved in chemical weapons attacks carried out by the former regime. He noted that a new phase of handling chemical weapon remnants will begin through technical cooperation with international partners.
