Paleolithic Mammoth Hunting Gender Bias

Overview

Genetic analysis of 521 woolly mammoth remains from across Eurasia and North America revealed that Upper Paleolithic hunters disproportionately targeted female individuals. In bone assemblages linked to human activity, about 70 % of the specimens were female, whereas natural death sites were dominated by males (roughly two‑thirds). Researchers suggest that the matriarchal herd structure and smaller size of females made them more predictable and easier to hunt.

A new multinational study published in *Current Biology* expanded the dataset with DNA from more than 500 specimens, including 448 previously unstudied remains dated between 30,000 and 20,000 years ago. Lead authors Hannah M. Moots, Jarosław Wilczyński and Matthew Wooller propose that the bias may reflect the smaller size of females, their predictable herd movements, or simply higher encounter rates, underscoring the importance of mammoths as a source of meat, hide, bone and ivory for Upper Paleolithic peoples.

A complementary study of 1,770 stone tools from the Ararat‑1 cave in central Armenia showed the site functioned as a temporary repair station on seasonal migration routes rather than a permanent settlement. The same international consortium confirmed the gendered pattern in the mammoth DNA data, reinforcing the conclusion that Paleolithic hunters preferentially targeted matriarchal groups.

Together, these findings provide a clearer picture of strategic hunting practices during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic, highlighting a consistent bias toward female mammoths across different regions and archaeological contexts.
