In the Campeonato Brasileiro, Palmeiras has maintained a strong position in the race for the title. By the 30th round, Palmeiras increased its points to 63, remaining just one point behind leader Flamengo. This progress was bolstered by a 4-1 victory over Corinthians in the 400th Derby at Nubank Parque. The win was fueled by two goals from Agustín Giay, a strike from Alexander Barboza, and an own goal by Matheus Bidu. Although Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza saved a penalty from Paulinho, the team could only manage a late consolation goal by Gustavo Henrique. While Palmeiras continues its title pursuit, the defeat contributed to a crisis for Corinthians, who entered an eight-match losing streak and moved to 16th place with 32 ~~points, narrowly avoiding~~ points. This position leaves them tied with Internacional in the relegation ~~zone following a draw between Grêmio and Internacional.~~ zone. This losing streak is noted as a trend that has historically preceded relegation in the Brasileirão since 2006. Following the match, goalkeeper Hugo Souza apologized to fans, while interim coach William Batista defended the squad. The club has recently appointed Clarence Seedorf to manage the team, replacing Fernando Diniz. Additionally, defender Gabriel Paulista has criticized the club’s management, alleging that unpaid salaries and a lack of institutional support are affecting the squad, describing the situation as a “nightmare” and noting that he has offered financial assistance to teammates. In response to these public criticisms, the Corinthians Deliberative Council has called an extraordinary meeting to address the club’s financial management and institutional stability. Following the derby, Palmeiras faces suspensions for key players Agustín Giay and Gustavo Gómez due to yellow card accumulation. The team is scheduled to compete in the Copa Libertadores semifinals against Fluminense before facing Athletico-PR in the league.
