Palo Alto police Taser use of force incident
Overview
On July 19, a man sustained a fractured neck vertebra after being tased by a police officer at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California. Video footage released by the Palo Alto Police Department shows the officer warning the man before firing the Taser into his chest. Following the deployment, the man collapsed and remained face down for approximately three minutes before being handcuffed.
The individual was charged with trespassing, drug possession, and resisting arrest. City Manager Ed Shikada reported to the City Council that the man later apologized for his conduct. The city’s police auditor is expected to review the officer’s use of force. The release of the footage follows California’s Assembly Bill 748, which requires disclosure when an officer’s use of force results in “great bodily injury.”
