Ilya Espino de Marotta has officially assumed her role as the Administrator of the Panama Canal for the 2026–2033 term, making history as the first woman to lead the interoceanic waterway in its 112-year history. Succeeding Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, Espino de Marotta is a marine engineer with over 40 years of experience at the institution, having previously served as Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer. To support the new administration, the Panama Canal Board of Directors has appointed Miguel Antonio Lorenzo Fábrega as Deputy Administrator. Lorenzo, a veteran with 28 years of experience at the Canal and former Vice President of Infrastructure and Engineering, was selected to ensure the continuity and long-term stability of operations. Her administration is tasked with managing significant challenges regarding water security caused by climate fluctuations and El Niño. To address these issues, her term will oversee an $8.5 billion investment portfolio and a strategic vision focused on infrastructure. Key priorities include the construction of a reservoir on the Río Indio to secure freshwater supplies, the development of new container terminals on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and the expansion of energy and logistics corridors. The administration will specifically focus on the ‘Strategic Vision 2025-2035,’ which prioritizes water security, operational resilience, service diversification, and strengthening Panama’s position as a global logistics and energy hub.
