Panathinaikos is managing an injury crisis following a loss to PAOK in the Greek Super Cup semifinals. Spanish forward Juancho Hernangómez suffered a right adductor muscle injury during that match, joining a list of sidelined players including Kendrick Nunn, Nigel Hayes-Davis, Kostas Sloukas, and Mustafa Fall. Additionally, the injury list expanded to include Mathias Lessort. Despite these significant absences, Panathinaikos secured a dominant 102-79 victory over ASVEL Villeurbanne in their second EuroLeague match at the OAKA Arena on September 29. Sylvien Francisco led the scoring with 19 points, while Lefteris Mantzoukas contributed 16 points and 6 rebounds. Panagiotis Kalaitzakis also recorded a career-high 5 assists. The roster depth allowed for a balanced offensive performance, with 11 different players scoring during the match. Head coach Željko Obradović expressed satisfaction with the team's depth and the performance of the Greek players, though he noted a need to improve defensive discipline regarding three-point fouls. ASVEL Villeurbanne coach Tony Parker acknowledged Panathinaikos' superiority, stating the match demonstrated the level of physicality and mental readiness required to compete at the top tier of European basketball. With this win, Panathinaikos moves to a 2-0 record in the EuroLeague. The team now prepares for its next home game against Maccabi Tel Aviv on October 2.
