Panhellenic Medical Association leadership crisis
Overview
The Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS) is experiencing institutional instability concerning its leadership and election processes. Following the appointment of a provisional committee in July 2026, 24 medical associations issued a joint letter to the Greek Prime Minister and the Minister of Health, demanding the restoration of legality and the scheduling of new elections. The signatories contend that the provisional committee is overstepping its mandate by performing administrative duties instead of focusing solely on election organization.
In response, the European Council of Medical Associations (CEOM) issued a communication to Greek medical bodies. While the CEOM emphasized that professional and institutional autonomy is essential for patient safety and public trust, it clarified that it lacks the authority to intervene in national legal or electoral matters, which remain under the jurisdiction of Greek authorities and courts.
