Paraguay is expanding its technological capabilities in the aerospace and agricultural sectors. In the agricultural field, the Agro IA project, a collaboration with the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, is developing South America’s first large-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for autonomous crop spraying, which is expected to debut in 2027. In the aerospace sector, the nation is preparing for the October 2026 launch of GuaraníSat-2. GuaraníSat-2 from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. As part of the ‘Paraguay al Espacio’ initiative, this nanosatellite represents a significant shift from its predecessor, GuaraníSat-1, because it was designed, integrated, and built entirely by a team of over 40 Paraguayan specialists and researchers rather than relying on technical assistance from Japan. The satellite project involves strategic alliances between the Paraguayan Space Agency (AEP), academia, and private industry, alongside international cooperation with entities such as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Mexican Space Agency, and various institutions in Italy and Japan. GuaraníSat-2 is intended to monitor crops, collect scientific data regarding the South Atlantic Anomaly, and facilitate radio communications. To support the mission, student Nadia Ferreira has developed the ARAPY-1 experimental ground station. Created as a high school final project in collaboration with the Space Lab, the station utilizes three specialized programs to track the satellite, receive signals, and manage station control via rotating antennas. This development aims to enable Paraguay to monitor the satellite’s location and retrieve transmitted data directly from within the country.
