The Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) initiated a project to redesign the national guaraní banknotes to commemorate the currency’s 83rd anniversary. The redesign, which involved research by historians and biologists, aimed to update the iconography to reflect Paraguayan history, biodiversity, and identity without changing the number of zeros in the currency. In October 2026, the BCP officially unveiled the new banknote series, marking the first major renewal of the nation’s paper currency in over sixty years. The new series maintains existing denominations ranging from 2,000 to 100,000 guaraníes. The designs incorporate historical figures, indigenous peoples, and local landscapes. Specifically, the 10,000 guaraní note will be produced using polymer, while higher denominations will honor figures such as Celsa and Adela Speratti. The update introduces enhanced security features, including watermarks and optically variable inks, as well as accessibility improvements such as varying note lengths to assist visually impaired users. Existing banknotes will remain legal tender and continue to circulate during a gradual transition period. Following the unveiling, the BCP confirmed that the transition to the new banknotes will begin in the first quarter of 2027. To increase durability, the lower denominations—specifically the 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 guaraní notes—will be manufactured using polymer. The series also features relief printing and advanced security threads to combat counterfeiting, while the visual elements will highlight local fauna, including the jaguar and various bird species.
