As Paraguay observes Youth Day in September 2026, the nation continues to address the economic and demographic realities of its approximately 1.5 million citizens aged 15 to 29, who comprise 24.7% of the population. Labor market data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the Ministry of ~~Labor~~ Labor, Employment and Social Security (MTESS) highlights persistent challenges with informal employment. While 60.1% of youth are currently employed, informality remains extremely high among the youngest workers, reaching 89.4% for those aged 15 to 19. To mitigate these challenges, President Santiago Peña has announced the addition of 5,000 higher education and technical training spots, bringing the total number of available scholarships to nearly 7,600. These efforts are supported by the 2026 national budget, which allocates over G. 13 trillion toward youth-focused initiatives, specifically targeting training, employment preparation, and credit assistance. Beyond economic factors, the youth demographic is playing an increasing role in the political landscape. The Electoral Justice department reports that young people, aged 18 to 29, represent 1.36 million voters, accounting for 27% of the electorate for the upcoming 2026 municipal elections. During the Youth Day celebrations, religious leaders have issued messages calling for young people to act as a ‘springtime of hope’ through wisdom and community involvement.
